A Blow-up, a Bump and a Game of War, by Dawn Maxwell
Day two on the Recovery Bus started with a group pow wow outside of Joe and Dodee’s home, the idea being to strategize our game plan for the day. It began well with a recap of what’s been accomplished and where we have to dig in…that mostly being Dad Joe.
All three therapists expressed concern of his absence during the intense family sessions and what appeared to be avoidance…but I’m not a doc. Terry expressed the need to meet Joe where he is at before digging into too deeply. I believe our other two pros may feel differently.
Surprisingly we had some very colorful banter and disagreement between Dr. Kendra and Bryan (our unconventional maverick) in therapeutic styles relating on how to treat Dodee. I must say the sparks flew between the two of them and it was fascinating to see two mental health folk go at it and observe their resolution which ended in an hugging-it-out session. Wild!
This exchange caught the production crew, our executive producer and myself off guard as we watched Bryan’s hashing it out with our beloved “Earth Mama” Doc (who held her own, I must say).
Later in the day I personally enjoyed a game of War with sweet little eight-year-old Caleb using his Spider-Man cards and at last count I do believe I was ahead. More tomorrow as we enter day three, our first full day with all four family members present.
Let’s keep praying we keep this bus in the station long enough to get the whole family on board…therapeutically and recovery-wise that is.
Hanging on to that hope,
Dawn
